Mindfulness by Miles

If you’re going to do just ONE thing to transform your health, what would it be?

Eating a balanced diet

Exercising

Practicing deep breathing

A lot of people want quick and easy ways to improve their health. However, when it comes to diet, fitness, and overall well-being, it can be hard to separate the facts from the fads. Moreover, it can be hard to find changes and routines that easily fit into their daily lives.

That’s why today, MBO Partners CEO Miles Everson shares a good book about transforming one’s health. He believes one of the keys to achieving people’s #HealthGoals is not by immediately starting BIG, but by doing and focusing on ONE THING, one step at a time.

Starting With SIMPLE Changes

Michael Mosley is a British TV journalist, producer, presenter, and former doctor who has worked for the BBC since 1985. He is best known as a presenter of TV programs about biology and medicine, and for his regular appearances on The One Show

Mosley is an intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diet advocate who has written bestselling books promoting the ketogenic diet. These include:

  • The Fast Diet
  • The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet
  • The Clever Guts Diet
  • The Fast 800
  • The Fast 800 Keto

Additionally, in October 2022, Mosley published his latest book titled:

“Just One Thing: How Simple Changes Can Transform Your Life!”

In this book that is based on the popular BBC podcast, “Just One Thing,” Mosley presents simple and easy changes people can make daily to experience significant positive impacts on their overall health.

According to Mosley, there are around 30 simple and easy activities people can try every day. These are grouped according to the ideal time of day that such activities can be done.

The times are divided into:

  • Early morning
  • Breakfast
  • Mid-morning
  • Lunchtime
  • Afternoon
  • Evening

… and what are some of the activities Mosley mentioned in his book?

  • Sing
  • Stand on one leg
  • Exercise
  • Take a nap
  • Stand up
  • Dance
  • Learn a new skill
  • Read

Everson says upon reading the book, one of the activities that captured his attention is standing on one leg

In the book, Mosley wrote that standing on one leg is something people can incorporate into any part of their day, every day. The author even mentioned that he personally does that while brushing his teeth!

Why is Mosley recommending this activity?

It’s because he believes balance is a predictor of a person’s health in later life.

In his words:

“There’s a lot of research that shows that people’s balance is deteriorating because they spend so much time on their bottoms.”

There was actually a study published in the British Medical Journal where researchers took a whole bunch of 50-year-olds and measured lots of things about them, including their ability to stand on one leg with the eyes opened and with the eyes closed.

A decade later, these researchers studied the same group of people. Guess what they found out?

One of the best predictors of life expectancy among those who were still alive and hadn’t died of cancer or heart disease was their ability to stand on one leg!

According to Mosley in his book:

“So, it seems it’s a very powerful predictive value. But also, it has very powerful practical value. Because it means you’re less likely to fall over and you’re more likely to keep going.”

Moreover, Mosley says balancing on one leg is an ability that improves the more people do it. First, he recommends aiming for 30 seconds with both eyes opened and 10 seconds with both eyes closed.

Other topics in Mosley’s book include how eating chocolate with 60% to 70% cacao content is good for the heart, how singing can give a person a natural “high,” and how having more house plants can improve one’s mood and productivity.

See?

Mosley’s recommendations are truly simple and easy to apply! These activities wouldn’t force you to make major changes in your daily routines.

According to Everson, the key here is not trying to do all the activities stated in Mosley’s book, but CONSISTENCY. According to him, even if you’ve resolved to do just one of the suggested activities, you can still see gradual improvement in your health and well-being as long as you’re consistent.

You might want to grab a copy of the book and read it during your free time, too!

… and for those of you who’ve already read it, Everson says you may send him a message via LinkedIn to talk about your thoughts on Mosley’s health concept.

Advance happy weekend, everyone!
