Karlo Elamparo is currently working as a Senior Portfolio Quantitative Analyst under the Portfolio Risk Team of a fintech company called Earnest. He handles pricing optimization for the company’s personal loan products. In addition, he uses machine learning methods to glean insights from various data sources and turn those into process—or product-development projects. He also monitors the risk of the portfolios of Earnest and creates reports and visuals which their capital market team uses in securitizations.

He handles pricing optimization for the company’s personal loan products. In addition, he uses machine learning methods to glean insights from various data sources and turn those into process—or product-development projects. He also monitors the risk of the portfolios of Earnest and creates reports and visuals which their capital market team uses in securitizations.

Karlo was an Equity Research Analyst during the time he was working with Valens. His main roles were to cover the US Healthcare sector and make recommendations on companies that can be included in the company’s portfolio. Furthermore, he was in charge of updating Valens’ monthly economic publication and automated some of the company’s reports. His most important responsibility for the company, he jokingly said, was being the official photographer during the company’s out-of-town trips.

Currently, he wants to continue deepening his knowledge of quantitative methods in consumer finance, as well as improving his data science skills. He believes that machine learning methods present opportunities to help improve our general understanding of financial data, which will continue to a disproportionate amount of financial innovation. In fact, he said that it was in Valens where he first caught wind of the demand for people in finance who also had the right knowledge of programming, math, and statistics.

So far, the biggest challenge in his career has been transitioning from the investment space in the Philippines to the more quantitative roles in the U.S.

One of the most interesting facts about Karlo is his love for photography and traveling.
